Brief Bio of Kalle Lyytinem

Kalle Lyytinen is Iris S. Wolstein professor Case Western Reserve University in Information Systems and an adjunct professor at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He serves currently on the editorial boards of several leading IS journals including Information Systems Research, JSIS, Information&Organization, Requirements Engineering Journal, Information, Technology & People and Information Systems Journal. He serves as the senior editor of AIS journal. He has published over 150 scientific articles and conference papers and edited or written eight books on topics related to system design, method engineering, implementation, software risk assessment, computer supported cooperative work, standardization, and ubiquitous computing. He is currently involved in research projects that look at the IT induced innovation in software development, architecture and construction industry, and is developing a high level requirements model for large scale systems. He is also engaged in a project supported by NSF that focuses on the institutional forces involved the development of global electronic commerce. His research interests include information system theories, computer aided system design and method engineering, system failures and risk assessment, computer supported cooperative work, nomadic computing, and the innovation and diffusion of complex technologies and the role of institutions in such processes.

Brief Bio of Tom Gilb

Tom Gilb was born in Pasadena in 1940, emigrated to London 1956, and to Norway 1958, where he joined IBM for 5 years, and where he resides when not traveling. He has mainly worked within the software engineering community, but since 1983 with Corporate Top Management problems, and 1988 with large-scale systems engineering. He is an independent teacher, consultant and writer. He has published eight books, including the early coining of the term "Software Metrics" (1976) which is the basis for SEI CMM Level 4. He wrote "Principles of Software Engineering Management" (1988, now in 13th printing), and "Software Inspection" (1993). Both titles are really systems engineering books in software disguise. His pro-bono systems engineering activities include several weeks a year for US DoD and Norwegian DoD, and Environmental (EPA) and Third-World Aid charities and organizations.

Brief Bio of Leszek Maciaszek

Prof. Leszek Maciaszek has been developing application and system software for mission-critical business information systems for the past thirty years. He specializes in multi-tier system production and integration, with business components as the centre of gravity and active databases as the centre of system stability. A long-time critic of shortcomings of relational database technology, he keenly observes a rocky road of databases towards objects and service-oriented technologies. Originally from Poland, he lives in Australia since 1985. Since 1991, he has been an Associate Professor of Computing at Macquarie University ~ Sydney.

Leszek has worked and consulted interchangeably in academia and industry. His work engagements have included Poland, Kuwait, USA, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Macao and Australia. He has been a regular trainer to IT industry and presenter of research papers, keynotes, and panel position statements at major international conferences. He has extensive consulting experience, frequently to large international corporations, and including coordination and supervision of large-scale enterprise information systems.

Leszek's extensive list of published contributions includes a number of textbooks and reference books. Main past book titles are: "Database Design and Implementation" (Prentice Hall, 1990) and "Requirements Analysis and System Design. Developing Information Systems with UML" (Addison Wesley, 2001). The latter has been translated to several languages and the second edition will be published in mid 2004. He is also the lead author of a comprehensive forthcoming software engineering textbook "Practical Software Engineering. A Case-Study Approach" (Addison-Wesley, 2004).

Brief Bio of Peri Loucopoulos

Pericles Loucopoulos holds the chair of Information Systems Engineering, at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology (UMIST), in Manchester, U.K. His academic interests are in the areas of requirements engineering, enterprise knowledge modelling, and information systems development approaches. His work focuses on the provision of Information Processing systems that support large, complex and dynamic organisational systems and to this end, his research addresses both systems engineering issues and issues relating to organisational objectives, strategy and business processes. His research work has been been supported by numerous research grants funded by the U.K. EPSRC, by the Commission of the European Communities and by industry.

He is the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Requirements Engineering and is on the editorial board of four other journals. He has served on the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society Advisory Committee and has been a member of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on the Entity-Relationship Approach and of the Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE). He has served as General Chair and Programme Chair of six international conferences and has been a member of over 90 Programme Committees of international conferences. He has been a Visiting Professor at different Universities, and has acted as an international scientific expert for Italian, Austrian and Greek Governmental institutions. He sits, as a non-executive director, on the Board of Red2Plc, a publicly quoted company specialising in multi-hosting and application services provision.

He is the co-author of 5 books, the co-editor of 1 book, the editor of 2 volumes of conference proceedings, and the author and co-author of over 120 papers published in academic journals and conference proceedings.

Brief Bio of Jim Coplien

Jim Coplien is the Vloebergh Professor of Computer Science at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is a Visiting Professor at University of Manchester, and an Associate Professor at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. He holds a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering, an MS in Computer Science, both from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His early career work included pioneering work on object-oriented design in C++ and the foundational work on software patterns in general and organizational patterns in particular. His current research areas include ethnography, software composition, and formal foundations of pattern languages.

He is the author of several books on C++ programming and design, and has edited and written several books about software patterns. He is a Member Emeritus of the Hillside Group, a small consortium of industry leaders providing industry-wide leadership and support in the pattern discipline. He was program chair of ACM OOPSLA '96 and has organized and or chaired several pattern conferences.

Isidro Laso is a Scientific Officer of the New working environment Unit in the European Commission. Responsible for collaborative solutions and strategy planning, as well as Single European Electronic Market initiative and IberoAmerica and rural/agrifood related projects.

He is also a professor of eBusiness at the Polytechnical University of Madrid-CEPADE and Professor of Internet Platforms at the National University of Distance Education.
