Workshop Background and Goals

The growing numbers of elderly population impose an urgent need to develop new approaches to care provision. The convergence of a number of technologies such as multi-agent systems, federated information management, safe communications, hypermedia interfaces, rich sensorial environments, increased intelligence of home appliances, and collaborative virtual environments, represents an important enabling factor for the design and development of virtual elderly support community environments.
The workshop intends to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners, care providers, care workers, service developers, decision makers, and social policy makers on approaches, methods, techniques, guidelines, and tools related to tele-monitoring and tele-assistance supporting the independent living of elderly.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

Papers may address one or more of the listed topics, although the areas of interest for the workshop are not limited to the followings authors can submit papers on other related topics, provided they fit in the general theme of the workshop.

- Virtual communities and virtual organizations for elderly assistance
- Multi-agent approaches supporting tele-services
- Mobile and pervasive computing in elderly assistance
- Specialized user interfaces for elderly
- Remote monitoring and supervision
- Security and privacy for tele-services
- Distributed information management for tele-assistance
- Development of value-added tele-services
- Specialized devices and home appliances controlled by computers
- Tele-assistance infrastructures development
- Creating trust and socio-organizational issues related to tele-assistance

Format of the Workshop

The workshop will comprise a number of invited talks, prototype demonstrations, and oral presentations of previously submitted papers that go through a double peer review process. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in form of a book. The best papers will be considered for possible inclusion in a special issue of the Journal of Networking and Virtual Organizations.

Submission of Papers

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers in the areas listed above and other related areas. Only full papers in English will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages (5000 words). Instructions for preparing the manuscript (in Word and Latex format) are available at the ICEIS web site. Postscript/RTF versions of the manuscript should be submitted through the ICEIS web-based paper submission procedure.

Author notification: February 15, 2004
Camera-ready paper submission: March 1, 2004
