Tutorials

The role of the tutorials is to provide a platform for a more intensive scientific exchange amongst researchers interested in a particular topic and as a meeting point for the community. Tutorials complement the depth-oriented technical sessions by providing participants with broad overviews of emerging fields. A tutorial can be scheduled for 1.5 or 3 hours.

Instructors

Wilfrid Utz
OMiLAB gGmbH
Germany

Brief Bio
Wilfrid Utz is reponsible for OMiLAB NPO (www.omilab.org), the non-profit organization headquartered in Berlin supporting the conceptual modelling community organized around emerging topics with respect to domain-specific conceptual modelling. Wilfrid completed his PhD thesis in 2020 at the University of Vienna in the field of metamodel design and knowledge representation using conceptual structures. He has been involved in numerous international research and innovation projects and gained experience in the field of modelling method conceptualization, design, and implementation of modelling tools using the open ADOxx Metamodelling Platform (www.adoxx.org).
Patrik Burzynski
OMiLAB NPO
Germany

Brief Bio
PATRIK BURZYNSKI is a computer scientist, currently working as part of the OMiLAB team, developing applications using cloud-services. His interests include programming and meta-modeling. During his study of Business Informatics at the University of Vienna he was involved in several international research projects (e.g. plugIT, ComVantage). After finishing his master’s degree (Dipl.-Ing.) he worked at the University of Vienna for the research group Knowledge Engineering as a university assistant, teaching courses on Modelling and Meta-Modelling and working on the Bee-Up tool before moving on to join the OMiLAB NPO.
Robert Andrei Buchmann

Brief Bio
ROBERT ANDREI BUCHMANN received his doctoral degree in the field of E-commerce application models from Babe?-Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca, Romania, in 2005. Since then, he has been specializing in Semantic Technology and Conceptual Modelling, as enablers for Knowledge Management Systems and Enterprise Architecture Management. During 2012-2015 he occupied a postdoctoral research position at University of Vienna, specializing in Agile Modelling Method Engineering, while managing metamodelling and requirements engineering tasks for the ComVantage FP7 project. Currently, he occupies a Professor position at Babe?-Bolyai University and is the Scientific Director of the University‘s Business Informatics Research Center, where his team is investigating opportunities of interplay between the paradigms of Semantic Web, Enterprise Modelling and Requirements Engineering. Abstract

The research field of Conceptual Modelling identifies models as artefacts describing a real or proposed system on an abstraction level that is adequate for a given purpose. Consequently, it is essential to consider how such conceptual representations are developed and used in relation to the purpose and with the help of appropriate tooling. This tutorial focuses on the Bee-Up multi-language modeling environment and some key features that increase the value of models beyond their basic function (as diagrammatic documentation / communication support) within the scope of Enterprise Information Systems. Bee-Up supports modeling with a number of established languages - BPMN, EPC, ER, UML, Petri Nets - enriched with semantic links between various model types. The goal of the tutorial is to highlight that the key value proposition of Bee-Up is not limited to diagramming with established languages, but also emerges from how models can be used - model analysis, transformation, execution, integration with other systems. A selection of these will be demonstrated during the tutorial: conversion of visual models to RDF knowledge graphs, generation of SQL schemas and interoperation with cyber-physical devices. Theoretical aspects about what is under the hood of Bee-Up's model processing capabilities will also be briefly brought into discussion.
Bee-Up is an educational tool that can obtained at https://bee-up.omilab.org

Keywords

Domain-specific Conceptual Modeling, Model Value, Model Processing, Metamodelling, Bee-Up

Aims and Learning Objectives

The tutorial focuses on the aspect of development and realisation of conceptual models. It is structured in two sessions: theoretical background on conceptual modelling and hands-on/practical work using the realisation results of a given case. During the practical session, we focus on the capabilities of metamodeling to support model-value functionality within the selected case.

Target Audience

The tutorial targets students, researchers and practitioners in the area of conceptual modeling that have a research interest in the field of conceptual modeling.

Prerequisite Knowledge of Audience

The tutorial is on an introductory level with a strong hands-on focus during the practice session. Participants are guided during the development and realization of their conceptual models applying the principles of the CoChaCo approach and design applying the realization case of Bee-Up.

Detailed Outline

A. Theory: Conceptual Modelling (90min)
During the theoretical session, the concepts required to capture the domain of “conceptual modelling” are introduced as base elements for the conceptualization process. The CoChaCo approach as introduced in [2] is discussed as the vocabulary applicable to describe concepts and their interrelations. Such a viewpoint addresses the challenge that these models are applicable and usable by a selected audience not only from a technological background but also as a knowledge representation for human and machine interpretation [3].
B. Practice Session: Realisation of Conceptual Models
During the practice session, the participants will explore the capabilities of the Bee-Up modelling tool realization from the viewpoint of conceptual model development and realization. Different cases will act as examples to recognize the value of conceptual modelling and the impact of design decisions during the conceptualization on the availability of model-value functionality.
