Title: Designing Meaningful Agents.
Abstract:
Natural language dialogue systems exhibit increasingly rich behavior. But
what insight do they offer into our own conversations? In this talk, I offer
ways of describing the mechanisms of implemented systems as realizations of
our commonsense understanding of conversation. To do this, we need to give
computational content to the intuitions we use to ascribe meaning to one
another, sharpening our ideas about processes such as symbol grounding,
reference borrowing and deliberative rationality. Already, I suggest, we can
correctly describe implemented systems---even some information-state systems
that just manipulate structured representations of interpretation---as
rational agents. They do work collaboratively with their interlocutors, and
can co-construct aligned bodies of content. More speculatively, I suggest
that we will soon be able to flesh out these abilities into mechanisms of
commitment and coordination that allow systems to pursue public meanings as
an explicit target in both communication and learning. Such systems would
more faithfully realize the interrelated capacities that underpin our
judgments of meaning in interactions with one another, so we may be able to
defend the claim that such systems mean what they say. The more we know
about the breadth and complexity of meaning, however, the clearer it is that
we will have to conceptualize such systems not just as "interfaces", but as
listeners and speakers that share in our lives.
Submission of Papers
Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for oral presentation in
any of the areas listed above. Only full papers in English will be accepted,
and the length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages (5000 words).
Instructions for preparing the manuscript (in Word and Latex format) are
available at the
ICEIS web site. Postscript/RTF versions of the manuscript
should be submitted thru
ICEIS web-based paper submission procedure.
