Workshop Background and Goals

Huge amounts of information in digital format is currently available; for example, the world-wide-web is an  immense source of text, images, video, and sound. Structuring and understanding this multimedia information is a difficult task. Accessibility issues arise in this context, with personal identification techniques playing a key role in human-machine interfaces for security and restricted-access systems. Also, in everyday situations these techniques can be useful. Pattern recognition (PR) and machine learning (ML) provide formal frameworks in which this class of problems can be adequately addressed. On the other hand, exploratory analysis (data mining) and content-based retrieval of multimedia data serve both as important practical application domains for PR and ML techniques, and as a source of challenging research problems. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, practitioners and potential users with interests in the multidisciplinary topics listed above.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to

Topics:

- Document analysis and classification
- Pattern Recognition in Multimedia information systems
- Content-Based analysis and Retrieval
- Feature extraction and selection (for IP applications)

Techniques:

- Classification algorithms
- Unsupervised learning
- Nonparametric methods
- Prototype-based techniques
- Structural Matching
- Neural-based pattern recognition
- Graph-based methods
- Genetic techniques
- Grammar and language methods
- Grammatical inference
- Comparative studies

Applications:

- Biometrics and personal authentication
- Face recognition
- Data mining
- Databases, web and all those systems actually involved in the information systems

Format of the Workshop

The workshop will be a two days, single track, conference with oral presentations and invited talks.

Submission of Papers

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for oral presentation in any of the areas listed above. Only full papers in english will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages (5000 words). Instructions for preparing the manuscript (in Word and Latex formats) are available in the ICEIS web page. Postscript/RTF versions of the manuscript should be submitted thru ICEIS web-based paper submission procedure.
