Workshop Background and Goals

Security in Information Systems is one of the most pressing challenges facing organisations today. Global, national, and even local enterprises are driven by information. Many companies have discovered how critical this information is to the success of their businesses. And yet, few companies have effective ways of keeping  their information safe, avoiding unauthorised access, intrusions, secret information disclosure, etc.

Nowadays, rapid technological advances are provoking a greater use of information systems in organisations world-wide, which handle large quantities of data, managed by huge databases and datawarehouses. In addition information systems quite frequently manage information that can be considered sensitive, since it is related to certain intimate or personal aspects of persons (beliefs, medical data, sexual tendencies, etc.) and which must be specially protected.

People and organizations are becoming dependent on electronic information. This dependence makes for an inviting target for a new breed of terrorism that more are calling ‘ciberterrorism’.

Many organisations and governments of several countries are now realising how security problems can affect both business success and citizen rights, and they are proposing security policies, security planning, personal data protection laws, etc. Although these proposals are very important, it is also interesting to have international proposals in order to protect the information globally.

All of these factors, including technological, legislative, ethical and political factors, justify the importance of secure information systems, and encourage us to research in new techniques, models and methodologies, which aid designers developing safe information systems which protect information and keep within the law.

This workshop will serve as a forum to gather researchers, practitioners, students and anyone that works in or studies the field of security in information systems. The workshop will present new developments, and hopefully provide exchange of ideas and discussion on specific areas.

 

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Methodologies for security information systems development

  • Access control techniques

  • Multilevel security

  • Personal data protection

  • Information systems risk analysis

  • Techniques in modelling secure information systems

  • Security in databases

  • Security in datawarehouses

  • Security in DSS

  • Security in web information systems

  • Secure information systems architectures

  • Standards for information systems security.
  • Certification of security in information technology.
  • Cryptography.

 

Format of the Workshop

The workshop will comprise of invited talks and oral presentations of previously submitted papers that went through a double peer review process. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in the form of a book.

Submission of Papers

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for oral presentation in any of the areas listed above. Only full papers in English will be accepted, and the length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages (5000 words). Instructions for preparing the manuscript (in Word and Latex format) are available at the ICEIS web site (see below). Postscript/RTF versions of the manuscript should be sent electronically to the workshop secretariat (see e-mail below).

Author Notification: 27th December 2001
Final Camera-Ready Submission and Registration: 30th January 2002

Conference Location

The workshop will be held at the Escola Superior de Informática of the Universidade Castilla-La Mancha. Ciudad Real is one hour by car from Toledo, fifty minutes by train from Madrid, seventy minutes by train from Córdoba and two hours by train from Sevilla.
