The Analytical Approach to Information Value Management

Authors:

Diego Abbo

Abstract: Increased computer interconnectivity is offering organizations of all types unprecedented opportunities to im-prove operations, cutting costs, and sharing information. The success of many of these efforts depends, in part, of an organization ability to protect the data and systems, and mainly of the value of the used information. The achievement is to identify the value of both the Information and the Information Infrastructure in order not to spend a penny more of the value of what it should be protected and to define the appropriate information business budget. In general terms we can assume that the cyber dimension is a global set of information systems where it should be discerned two different accounts: the first is the snapshot of the patrimonial value of the information and the in use relative infrastructure. The second considers, in a given timeframe, the information income statement that means the cyber wealth produced.

The Value of Good Data - A Quality Perspective - A Framework for Discussion

Authors:

Tony O'Brien, Arun Sukumar and Markus Helfert

Abstract: This study has highlighted the benefits and value of quality information and the direct consequences associated with low quality data. This paper also describes a number of taxonomies which may be used to classify costs relating to both the consequences of low quality data and the costs of improving and assuring on-going data quality. The study then provides practical examples of data quality improvement initiatives undertaken within two large organisations. Finally a data governance model is proposed centring on three inter-related fundamental elements namely: People, Processes and Data, where any attempt to improve the quality of data within any organisation must be focussed around these three essential elements.

Data, Ontologies and Decision Making - An Inter-disciplinary Case Study

Authors:

Stephen Dobson, Arun Sukumar and Tony O'Brien

Abstract: Several studies have highlighted the need for information governance in organisations and the importance of quality data in decision making. Especially when considering the increasing need for collaboration, data-sharing, and interoperability. Organisations are not immune to importance of information governance and given the recent spate of information- related disasters and accidents, information risk management has become all the more important and its link to corporate governance explicitly noted and mapped. Data driven organisations typically lack the structure to associate ontologies tagged with data and are unable to offer the rich semantics that sometimes can enrich a decision maker's worldview. Data documents need not necessarily capture relationships and ontologically there are unable to offer the rich semantics that the data can sometimes show. The value of data is enriched by the associated semantics and modern enterprise systems are inadequate in their capacity to capture this rich source of knowledge and its representation. This research borrows approaches from urban sustainability to understand domain ontologies and their implications in system design and subsequent improvement in the value of organisational information. It uses case studies to highlight ontology modelling and how such an approach can add value in an organisational context specifically in the domains of system design and information value chain.
