Title:

Demonstrating Approach Design Principles during the Development of a DEMO-based Enterprise Engineering Approach

Authors:

Thomas van der Meulen, Marne de Vries and Aurona Gerber

Abstract: Enterprise engineering (EE) aims to address several phenomena in the evolution of an enterprise. One prominent phenomenon is the inability of the enterprise as a complex socio-technical system to adapt to rapidly-changing environments. In response to this phenomenon, many enterprise design approaches (with their own methodologies, frameworks, and modelling languages) emerged, but with little empirical evidence about their effectiveness. Furthermore, research indicates that multiple enterprise design approaches are used concurrently in industry, with each approach focusing on a sub-set of stakeholder concerns. The proliferating design approaches do not necessarily explicate their conditional use in terms of contextual prerequisites and demarcated design scope; and this also impairs their evaluation. Previous work suggested eleven design principles that would guide approach designers when they design or enhance an enterprise design approach. The design principles ensure that researchers contribute to the systematic growth of the EE knowledge base. This article provides a demonstration of the eleven principles during the development of a DEMO-based enterprise engineering approach, as well as a discussion to reflect on the usefulness of the principles.

Service-oriented Architecture: Describing Benefits from an Organisational and Enterprise Architecture Perspective

Authors:

Hatitye Chindove, Lisa F. Seymour and Francois I. van der Merwe

Abstract: Software architecture models describe the technical structure, constraints, and characteristics of software components and the interfaces between them. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a recent software architecture style with many benefits if used in the right context. Business agility, customer satisfaction, faster time to market, ease of partnering and lower business costs are some promised benefits. Yet SOA has not always benefitted organisations. One reason given is a misunderstanding of the relationship between SOA and enterprise architecture (EA). Therefore, this study in a large retail organisation in South Africa describes SOA benefits and classifies them into the various EA domains. SOA benefits are also classified into six broad categories namely: strategic, organisational, operational, managerial, maintenance and governance. The study comprises three cases from one organisation that deployed different architectures. SOA benefits are contrasted with benefits from other approaches. Organisational benefits not described before include greater collaboration amongst SOA participants enabling better learning opportunities. The results should assist IT management in preparing SOA business cases and in managing SOA deployments to ensure benefits are achieved.

Towards a Conceptual Model for an e-Government Interoperability Framework for South Africa

Authors:

Paula Kotzé and Ronell Alberts

Abstract: In September 2016, the South African Government published a White Paper on the National Integrated ICT Policy highlighting some principles for e-Government and the development of a detailed integrated national e-Government strategy and roadmap. This paper focuses on one of the elements of such a strategy, namely the delivery infrastructure principles identified, and addresses the identified need for centralised coordination to ensure interoperability. The paper proposes a baseline conceptual model for an e-Government interoperability framework (e-GIF) for South Africa. The development of the model considered best practices and lessons learnt from previous national and international attempts to design and develop national and regional e-GIFs, with cognisance of the South African legislation and technical, social and political environments. The conceptual model is an enterprise model on an abstraction level suitable for strategic planning.

A Growth State Transition Model as Driver for Business Process Management in Small Medium Enterprises

Authors:

Dina Jacobs, Paula Kotzé and Alta van der Merwe

Abstract: A key constraint for growing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa is the business skills required to grow the enterprises through the stages of transformation. Business process management (BPM) is one of the skills that could add value during transformation. Understanding the stages of transformation during SME growth would assist to position BPM as an instrument of value for SMEs. These stages of SME growth are typically defined as part of the SME growth stage models. However, criticism against SME growth stage models is of concern. In this article, we propose the 5S SME Growth State Transition Model in order to counteract some of the criticisms. The value contribution of the Model lies in defining typical states associated with SME growth that can be used as input in research to position BPM as management approach during SME growth.

DSML4PTM - A Domain-Specific Modelling Language for Patient Transferal Management

Authors:

Emanuele Laurenzi, Knut Hinkelmann, Ulrich Reimer, Alta van der Merwe, Pascal Sibold and Rainer Endl

Abstract: This paper presents a domain-specific modelling language for patient transferal management (DSML4PTM). To foster reusability within the modelling community, existing modelling languages were taken into account as far as possible and then extended as was needed by the application domain. The language was developed through iteration following the design science research methodology. For requirements elicitation purposes domain expertise and healthcare standards were taken into account. The new modelling language was evaluated first with respect to the elicited requirements and then through the creation of two models reflecting a reference process and an application scenario. Next, an evaluation on the perceived usefulness and cognitive effort of the language was performed using a focus group with modelling and domain experts.

Managing and Controlling Decentralized Corporate Energy Systems - Transferring Best-practice Methods to the Energy Domain

Authors:

Christine Koppenhoefer, Jan Fauser and Dieter Hertweck

Abstract: Managing decentralized corporate energy systems is a challenging task for enterprises. However, the integration of energy objectives into business strategy creates difficulties resulting in inefficient decisions. To improve this, practice-proven methods such as the Balanced Scorecard and Enterprise Architecture Management are transferred to the energy domain. The methods are evaluated based on a case study. Managing multi-dimensionality and high complexity are the main drivers for an effective and efficient energy management system. Both methods show a positive impact on managing decentralized corporate energy systems and are adaptable to the energy domain.

Towards an Understanding of the Connected Mobility Ecosystem from a German Perspective

Authors:

Anne Faber, Adrian Hernandez-Mendez and Florian Matthes

Abstract: This paper presents a model of the connected mobility ecosystem, which contains a description of the associated industry. Although connected mobility is a topic of global relevance and interest, we analyzed the ecosystem from a Germany perspective due to Germany’s strong history of automotive OEMs and suppliers. To gain a better understanding of the mobility ecosystem, we introduced a modified ego network visualization focusing on mobility services. This visualization guarantees an user-centred design analysis of the ecosystem and enables stakeholders to identify companies that are highly contributing in providing these services and rather passive contributors. Additionally, it allows ecosystem stakeholders to understand the complex collaborations of companies in providing mobility services. We plan to continue our work focusing on mobility scenarios addressing the needs and demands of mobility consumers.
